The Latest on Hurricane Lane

Hurricane Lane made landfall around 1:15PM Saturday afternoon, September 16, about 80 miles North of Mazatlan, and 20 miles Southeast of El Dorado, completely missing the Los Cabos area.  It hit land as a Category 3 Hurricane with sustained wind speeds of 125 mph (205 km/hr), before weakening as it passed over land.

For Comparison: Hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast with sustained winds of 135 mph, and Hurricane Wilma hit Cancun with sustained winds of 125 mph.

So far no rain or wind at all from the back end of the storm, but some threatening looking cumulus clouds are building now.

We could get winds of 30 mph over the next couple of days, but nothing that will cause any damage.  After that, it's sun and sand like normal!

Not even a drop yet.  We could get a thundershower or two over the weekend, but that's just normal September weather.

What is a  Category 3 Hurricane?

Winds 111-130 mph (96-113 kt or 178-209 km/hr). Storm surge generally 9-12 ft above normal. Some structural damage to small residences and utility buildings with a minor amount of curtainwall failures. Damage to shrubbery and trees with foliage blown off trees and large trees blown down. Mobile homes and poorly constructed signs are destroyed. Low-lying escape routes are cut by rising water 3-5 hours before arrival of the center of the hurricane. Flooding near the coast destroys smaller structures with larger structures damaged by battering from floating debris. Terrain continuously lower than 5 ft above mean sea level may be flooded inland 8 miles (13 km) or more. Evacuation of low-lying residences with several blocks of the shoreline may be required.

What is the Weather Like Right Now?

Overcast, Warm (85° or so), and winds are calm.  Some threatening looking cumulus clouds are starting to move in now.

Update for other Mexican Resorts

No major damage has been reported for any of the coastal ports of  Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, Ixtapa/Zihuatenejo, or Acapulco.  Puerto Vallarta received some steady rain, and the ports were closed for about an hour. Mazatlan has reported winds of about 70 mph with about 6 inches of rain Saturday morning.  Some flooding and tree fall in local areas (not tourist areas) has been reported, but the tourist area is reportedly undamaged..

What This Means to You

It looks like we've avoided the storm again.  If you're in Cabo, you'll probably be out and about like normal, but noticing more cloud cover than usual.  All stores, restaurants, bars, and clubs are open for business as usual.

Most airlines issued relaxed change policies due to Hurricane Lane.  Check with your airline to see if your flight is disrupted and what your options are. 
The airport remained open throughout the week.
